Donut Browser Review 2026: Free, Local and Open

Donut Browser review: unlimited free local profiles, an AGPL-3.0 app, a Chromium engine with C++ spoofing and Linux packages. Scored 93.0/100.

Donut Browser is an open-source, local-first profile manager on a native Chromium fingerprint engine. It launched in 2025 and is first in our ranking with 93.0 out of 100.

Verdict

The best free antidetect browser, and the best overall for most users. You get unlimited profiles with full fingerprinting at $0, no account, and an app you can audit. The closed engine and paid automation are the trade-offs.

Scores

Criterion Weight Score Note
Fingerprint engine 22% 9 Chromium fork with spoofing in C++
Local-first privacy 18% 10 Local by default, no account, no incidents
Free tier 14% 10 Unlimited local profiles at $0
Open source 12% 8 App is AGPL-3.0; engine is closed
Automation and API 12% 9 Local API and CDP; MCP on paid plans
Platforms 10% 10 Windows, macOS and Linux, five package formats
Profile management 8% 9 Groups, proxies, cookies, extensions, ephemeral profiles
Price at scale 4% 9 Local profiles are free at any count

Engine

Profiles run on its own Chromium-based engine. Fingerprints are patched in C++, not injected with JavaScript, so there are no page-level hooks for toString or descriptor checks to find. Donut Browser used Camoufox (Firefox) before. It moved to its Chromium engine in mid-2026 and removed Camoufox in v0.28.0 in July 2026. Why that matters: Chromium vs Firefox antidetect browsers.

Privacy

There is no account. Profiles stay on your machine. Sync is optional, end-to-end encrypted and self-hostable. There is no known incident. Compare that with the breaches at two cloud vendors.

Free plan and pricing

Plan Price What you get
Free $0 Unlimited local profiles, full fingerprinting, proxies, WireGuard, local API
Solo $29/mo 20 cloud backups, remote MCP, commercial use

Automation

Donut Browser has a local REST API and exposes CDP for Playwright, Puppeteer and Selenium. It also supports MCP. Browser automation and MCP control need a paid plan.

Platforms

Windows, macOS and Linux. Linux gets AppImage, deb, rpm, Flatpak and Snap. Most rivals ship Linux partly, through Docker, or not at all.
