Chromium vs Firefox Antidetect Browsers: Which Engine to Pick
Engine choice trade-offs for antidetect browsers: crowd size, update cadence and automation. Which tools use Chromium, Firefox or both.
Every antidetect browser is built on Chromium, Firefox or both. The engine decides how well a profile blends in, how fast it gets security fixes, and which automation tools work with it.
Crowd size
A fingerprint hides best in a large crowd. Chrome and other Chromium browsers carry most desktop traffic. Firefox is a small share. So a Firefox profile is rarer, and a rare profile is easier to single out, even when each value is correct. For most account work, a Chromium profile blends in with more users.
Update cadence
Real browsers update every few weeks. An engine that falls behind reports an old version, and an old version is a signal. A frozen engine is worse. Multilogin’s Stealthfox, for example, is frozen at core 146. Kameleo states that its Chroma engine follows Chrome stable within 5 days. Most vendors do not publish their cadence.
Automation
| Tool | Chromium | Firefox |
|---|---|---|
| Puppeteer | Full (CDP) | Limited |
| Playwright | Full | Full, with patched builds |
| Selenium | Yes | Yes |
| CDP clients | Yes | No |
Chromium works with more tools. Firefox works well with Playwright, which is what Camoufox is built for.

The Donut Browser switch
Donut Browser first shipped profiles on Camoufox. In mid-2026 it moved to its own Chromium engine, and it removed Camoufox in v0.28.0 (July 2026). The reasons fit the trade-offs above: a larger crowd, wider automation support (CDP for Playwright, Puppeteer and Selenium), and spoofing in C++ inside the engine.
When Firefox is the right choice
- You script with Playwright and want a fully open engine: Camoufox.
- You need a Firefox profile for a site that treats browsers differently, and you also want Chromium: Kameleo, MoreLogin or AdsPower.
- You want variety across a large pool of profiles.
Engine matters more than engine brand
The base engine is half the story. The other half is how the spoofing is done. A Chromium fork with C++ patches is stronger than a stock Chromium with injected scripts.
